Physical
Type Display #3
Josh Nimoy, Feb 4, 2004

The
above image is a conceptual sketch of a single character module.
It is twelve rollers with graphics printed on them. Each roller
has an identical pattern printed on it, but that can change as
the prototype gets built and tested. In contrast to my two previous
typefaces, this one deals with rectilinear motion, so the parts
can be talked about as pixels - 3 pixels per roller to be exact.
I hope to have this done in wood and paper without electronics,
so I can show it to people and talk about it.
The
pattern was arrived at by combining all the possible on/off states
of a row of three pixels. Two rollers facing inward make a row
of six.
